How Marilyn Manson changed the angle of view on the song "Personal Jesus"

"Personal Jesus" is the twenty-third single by British band Depeche Mode, released in 1989 and written by Martin L. Gore. Marilyn Manson later covered the song in 2004.

The Story Behind the Cover Version and the Meaning of Marilyn Manson's Personal Jesus

The history of the cover version of the song Personal Jesus by Marilyn Manson

“Personal Jesus” was the last cover Marilyn Manson recorded of popular hits from the 1980s. Unlike "Sweet Dreams” and “Tainted Love”, the original song has not undergone significant changes.

If we talk about the meaning of the song “Personal Jesus", then we need to turn to the original composition of Depeche Mode. The song was inspired by the book "Elvis and Me" by Priscilla Presley. According to the author of the song Martin Gore:

“This song is about being Jesus to someone, someone who gives hope and care. It's about how Elvis Presley was a man and a teacher to her, that in everyone's heart there is something divine, a somewhat unbalanced view of someone.”

The divine meaning of the song: do not be afraid to believe God, find him in your heart.

In one of his interviews, Marilyn Manson explained why he decided to record “Personal Jesus”:

“I thought, if I had to write a song, this would be exactly what I wanted to say. That's why I chose this song. I think it’s even more ironic in the context of what’s happening today.”

“I was thinking about the possibility of collaborating with Shirley Manson on an album and was in such a state that I was even thinking about retiring from music. But after hearing the song “Personal Jesus” on the radio, I had an idea. I saw an opportunity to interpret this song in my own way and express my thoughts about politics and religion through it, perceiving it in a completely different way than Martin Gore.”

The musical component of the original song itself remained virtually unchanged. However, in the video for this song, Marilyn Manson tried to explore religious and political aspects by introducing a visual representation of this idea.

The music video, directed by Manson and Nathan Cox, features the band members accompanied by rear projection images showing various political figures including President John F. Kennedy, Joseph Stalin, Gandhi, Adolf Hitler and George W. Bush.

Symbolism of images in Marilyn Manson’s “Personal Jesus” video

Throughout the “Personal Jesus” video, dark undertones are present throughout. This enhances the darkness of the video and creates an ominous atmosphere through dark lighting and shadows, matching the nature of the music. The video contains many allusions to Christianity through iconographic images of signs on the palms; the religious aspect of the video is directly related to the title of the song. The music video features the regular lineup of the band, their outfits creating a creepy atmosphere through abstract dark makeup.

Throughout the video, political figures appear in the background behind the band, giving a clue to the song's hidden meaning: “someone who hears your prayers, someone who cares,” perhaps a mockery of authority.

It can be seen that a distorted sexualized image is maintained here, which differs from generally accepted ideas about women. Each shot uses lighting in the same way, showing that these women are in the same “world” and share the same ideology with the group. However, they are depicted as persons without an opinion, as they stand against a black background, which gives the impression of emptiness and makes them follow the distorted ideas of the Marilyn Manson group. This approach may also contain irony towards the mainstream audience's pickiness about the perfection of women and how they should be presented as sex objects.

Women act like nuns. They personify motherhood, which corresponds to Christian beliefs about the prohibition of abortion, but the child still ends up in a corrupt world. The mutilated image of the American flag in the background may symbolize the idea of the “American Dream.”
