How Lionel Richie wrote his biggest hit, "Hello"

“Hello” is a song by Lionel Richie, an American singer and songwriter. It was released in 1984 as part of his second solo album, “Can't Slow Down.” The song achieved success, peaking at number one on three Billboard charts: two weeks on the pop chart, two weeks on the R&B chart, and a full six weeks on the Adult Contemporary chart. Additionally, “Hello” peaked at number one on the UK singles chart for six weeks.

The story behind the creation and meaning of the song Hello by Lionel Richie

The history of the creation of the song Hello by singer Lionel Richie

Nowadays, Lionel Richie can only dream of being high on the charts. However, in the first half of the 1980s, he was one of the most popular pop singers in the United States, along with Prince and Michael Jackson. In Russia, Lionel Richie is mainly famous for the song “Hello”, but in his homeland his successes are significantly impressive. From 1981 to 1986, each of his singles entered the American “hot ten”.

The ballad, which Lionel Richie wrote and included on his 1984 album “Can't Slow Down,” was actually intended for his first solo album, but ultimately decided against it. However, his then-wife Brenda was impressed by the composition and convinced him to include it on his second album.

The meaning of the song “Hello” is reflected in its title. When Lionel was young, beautiful women passed him by, but his reserve prevented him from starting a conversation with them. The singer admits that at such moments he thought: “Hello, is it me you're looking for?”

But the divine meaning is more beautiful. Imagine that this is God speaking to you.

One day, his producer James Anthony Carmichael came to visit Richie. The singer was at the piano and greeted the guest with the same line. Carmichael said, “You need to finish this song.” Richie doubted: “Doesn’t she seem banal?” The producer replied: “Don't worry! This is a clear hit!” And after Richie wrote the lyrics to the song, he claims he literally “fell in love with it.”

“Hello” was appreciated not only by women, but also by timid men. The latter were grateful to Richie that “Hello” creates a romantic atmosphere, ideal for a declaration of love or for proposing to a lady.

The phrase "Hello! Is it me you're looking for?" quickly became a kind of “meme”. The author himself was the first to feel the consequences of the song’s success: he heard these words from everyone he met. Pranksters also distributed them under a portrait of Richie, turning it into a “Wanted” ad, or parodied them on a cutting board: “Hello! Is it me you're cooking for?”

Also a source of jokes was the video directed by Bob Giraldi for the song “Hello.” In it, Richie played the role of a teacher at an art school who is in love with an attractive but blind student. In the end, it turns out that their feelings are mutual - after a modeling lesson, the girl creates a bust with the face of her teacher, showing her love.

Richie tried to tell the director that the plot of the video did not fit the song. But he quickly rejected his remark, saying: “I’m telling the story, not you!” The singer was bothered by the clay bust. But even here the director did not agree: “He was sculpted by a blind woman! What do you expect from a blind woman?”

Unfortunately, the video was voted "the worst music video of all time" by music channel The Box. The “Hello” video was often cited as one of the worst and was parodied and ridiculed. In 2015, Richie himself became a participant in a skit that was shown on comedian Jimmy Fallon's TV show. In the skit, Fallon performed the song while painting a perfect portrait of Lionel while the singer himself played the role of a clay bust.

They also remembered the song “Hello” when the popular singer Adele released her own video with the same name. Prominent people immediately noticed the similarities in both the melody and the video. They quickly spliced the two clips together into a funny mash-up of Lionel calling the singer on her landline and her answering her cell phone. Lionel appreciated this joke and posted frames from the clips on his social network account, signing them with the phrase: “Hi Adele! Are you looking for me?

Regarding the hints of similarity between the songs, Lionel Richie noted that if his song “Hello” served as an inspiration for Adele, then he is proud of that fact. In February 2016, at the 58th Grammy ceremony, Adele and Richie finally met, but, unfortunately, they never performed together.

However, at the same ceremony, young performers honored Richie with tributes to his hits. In particular, singer Demi Lovato performed “Hello.” Lionel Richie has as many as 4 Grammy awards. Among them is the award for “Best Album of 1984,” which includes “Hello.” He also has an Oscar for the song “Say You, Say Me.”
