We tell you about the song "Lessons In Love" by Level 42

The song “Lessons in Love” by the British band Level 42, released in 1986, became a real triumph for the group. In the United Kingdom, the single reached the third position in the prestigious UK Singles Chart, and in the international arena, the success was even more impressive. The track entered the top ten in a number of countries and topped the charts in five countries at once: Germany, Spain, Finland, Switzerland and the Republic of South Africa, which made it the most successful release of the group at that time both at home and abroad.

The Story Behind the Song Lessons In Love by Level 42

If we talk about the meaning of the song, it is about a lost love, the performer is nostalgic for a love that has almost passed.

Mark King said that the composition was originally a musical fragment intended for the final part of the concert number “Physical Presence” from the album “World Machine”. Here is what Mark King said:

“Polydor Records strongly encouraged us to release a single that would fill the gap after the release of the album “World Machine” in 1985. As a result, we got “Something About You” and “Leaving Me Now”, which, by the way, turned out to be quite successful for us.

In 1986, when we were promoting this release in the United States, Polydor said they needed to have material they could work with in Europe or the whole effort would go to waste.

Around Christmas 1985, at my house in Bedford Hill, Stratham, myself, Boon Gould, Phil Gould, Mike Lindup and Wally Badarou got together and we just started writing songs.

We had three ideas that we wanted to develop: one of them became “Lessons In Love”, another one became “Children Say”, and the third one became “Freedom Someday”. All three of these songs ended up on the album “Running In The Family”, but at that time the album did not exist yet, since it was only a temporary project.”

In late December 1985, just after the Christmas holidays, King used a Sony digital tape recorder to write a rough draft of the song, consisting of a verse, chorus, and bridge.

The following January, he and producer and co-writer Wally Badarou listened to the recording again and decided that the original chorus wasn't convincing enough. As a result, Badarou completely rewrote the chorus, changing the chord progression and offering King a new vocal melody. Mark King describes the process:

“I had an idea that was inspired by an old Vera Lynn song, ‘We’ll Meet Again,’ and I managed to fit it into the final part of the live track, ‘A Physical Presence.’ That melody ended up being the basis for the verse. We were just looking for material for a single, so I sped it up, added a sequencer, and created a pulsating bass line.

Initially, I just had an idea for a verse, nothing more. So it was great when Wally came in and said, “What are we going to do next? What do we have in mind?” I played him my sketch, and the guys immediately liked it, especially Boon, who later wrote the lyrics for “Lessons In Love.”

At that time he was fond of alliterations, so such lines as “lessons of love”, “lifeboat”, “lie”, “lost at sea” and the like appeared in the text. The lyrics turned out to be excellent, truly brilliant.

It turned out that it was three of us writing the song – me, Wally and Boon. When I showed Wally the idea for the verse, he took the sequence I had and flipped it, basically turned it on its head.”
