We tell you about the song "Somebody to Love" by Jefferson Airplane
The song “Somebody to Love” is a song that was written by the band Great Society. It was later covered by the band Jefferson Airplane. Rolling Stone magazine included the Jefferson Airplane version in its list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time, placing it at number 274.
The Story Behind the Creation of Jefferson Airplane's Somebody to Love

In 1965, Darby Slick, Grace Slick's brother-in-law, wrote the song. He was a member of the San Franciscan band The Great Society, which also included Jerry Slick, Grace's husband and Darby's brother. In the band, Jerry played drums, and Darby was responsible for guitar. The Great Society released the track as a single in late 1965.
The single did not achieve the desired popularity, and in 1966, when Darby decided to study Indian music, the group broke up. Following this, Grace joined the already famous group Jefferson Airplane. As part of the new group, she contributed several successful songs: they recorded an updated version of “Somebody To Love” and created “White Rabbit", which Grace wrote while a member of The Great Society. For writing "Somebody To Love", Darby Slick received royalties, which he spent on years of studying Indian music.
Grace Slick was impressed by Jefferson Airplane's performances and watched them backstage after her own band had opened for them. When she was asked to join Jefferson Airplane, she enthusiastically accepted. This decision effectively ended The Great Society, but the legacy of her former band would soon be given a major boost.
When Grace Slick joined Jefferson Airplane, she brought two key compositions with her: “White Rabbit” and “Somebody to Love.” She played them to the band, and they embraced them. Grace Slick recalled:
“They loved them! We had a lot of creative freedom back then. I know Billy Joel once remarked that our skills were a bit lacking… You see, all the East Coast bands practiced in the Brill building, in a small room with one piano, and you were constantly working on perfecting the sound. They were used to making commercial jingles and couldn’t afford to be insincere…
“But we weren’t trained musicians… some of us knew more about music, but Billy was right… We were a very loose group, fun and quirky. Most of the songs up until the ’60s were about love or meant to lift the spirits, especially during World War II. Those songs were great. But then we started to change direction: we started writing about politics, wars, people like Nixon and others who were making big mistakes. We started to reflect what was going on around us, rather than just writing songs about romantic desires.”
The Meaning of the Song Somebody to Love by Jefferson Airplane
The song “Somebody to Love” is a great example of how changing the musical arrangement can almost completely change the meaning of a song. The Great Society’s slow version creates a sadder and more subdued atmosphere. While Jefferson Airplane increased the tempo, which added elements of anger and a desire for revenge to the track.
The song emphasizes the importance of fidelity and monogamy, asking the listener to find one true love who will support and help them overcome life's trials. However, the lyrics present love not as a random event, but as a conscious choice that a person can make.
This subtle but profound difference in philosophy sets this song in contrast to songs that talk about "falling in love," as if love is something that happens to a person without their conscious intention.
Be that as it may, the divine meaning of the song is in the question: don’t you want to love all people and God as God loves you?
