We tell you about the song "Blessed" performed by Elton John
Elton John created the composition Blessed for his famous album Made In England, released in 1995. This disc became the twenty-fourth studio release in his career. The author of the lyrics, as for many other songs of the musician, was Bernie Taupin. According to Elton himself, the lyrics to this song made a strong impression on him from the first reading.
The History of the Creation and Meaning of the Song Blessed by Elton John

Elton John, born Reginald Kenneth Dwight (March 25, 1947, Pinner, Middlesex), was already considered a living classic of pop rock by the mid-nineties: five dozen hits in the British Top 40, an Oscar for “The Lion King”, a charity fund to fight AIDS and a reputation as an artist who feels equally confident in a stadium and at a piano in a bar.
In 1994, the musician took a short break, moved from Atlanta to a new residence in Windsor and conceived an album that would sound softer than the synthesizer-saturated "The One". For the work, he brought back string arranger Paul Buckmaster to the studio, and entrusted the Californian Greg Penny with the job of producer for the first time. The material for the future album "Made in England" was written together with Bernie Taupin in the usual remote way: poetic texts came by fax, and Elton turned them into melodies in one or two mornings, sketching out chords on a Yamaha CFIIIS grand piano.
One of the last compositions of the session was "Blessed". Topin wrote the poem in October 1994, under the impression of a desired, but as yet unachievable fatherhood: his third wife was in the early stages of pregnancy, and the poet imagined a "future letter" to the child - a conversation about how he was already loved even before birth.
Elton, after reading the lyrics, insisted that the song close the album:
“It’s rare that words dictate harmony, but here I heard it instantly.”
"Blessed" was released as a single on February 27, 1995, a month before the album's release. In the UK, the song debuted at #15, and in the US, it reached #34 on the Billboard Hot 100, but fared much better on Adult Contemporary: six weeks at #2 and a year-end top three spot on American radio for the most-played ballads. In Canada, the track topped the similar RPM AC format, and in Brazil and Argentina, it spent a long time on radio stations specializing in soft rock and telenovela soundtracks. The song received BPI silver and RIAA gold status by the end of 1996, and by 2023, total streaming had exceeded 220 million plays.
Over time, “Blessed” found a second life outside the pop charts. It was included in the soundtrack of the TV series “Two Fathers and Two Sons,” it is heard at the end of the film “What Dreams May Come,” and adoption agencies and surrogacy clinics often use the track in public service announcements, emphasizing the idea of a “long-awaited child.”
Today, as Elton's concerts move into farewell status, "Blessed" remains one of those late-night ballads that effortlessly ranks alongside early "Your Song" and "Tiny Dancer." Its simple chords and gentle conviction make it a universal anthem for a parent's quiet dream—the dream of a child who hasn't yet been born, but who is already loved, accepted, and, in the words of the author, "illuminated with blessing."
