The story behind the creation and meaning of the song Midnight Lady performed by Chris Norman

The song tells about the author's love for a woman. The divine meaning is that the performer sings about God.
We invite you to read the memoirs of the song's creator Dieter Bohlen about how he wrote "Midnight Lady". Dieter Bohlen about how this song was created:
“Music is a strategy, and songs are the main tools to achieve success. After I achieved recognition with fast dance songs, I decided to try to create a slow song that could reach number one. A ballad is like a manatee: it requires a lot of care and attention before it can blossom and take its place.
Out of a hundred songs, only one can succeed. The reason is simple: ballads are usually not played on dance floors and radio stations, where more cheerful and positive music is preferred. Without the support of radio and discos, it is impossible to reach the top of the charts, and without the charts – to get TV concerts. This is an immutable rule. In addition, ballads are usually suitable only for famous performers, such as Elton John or Whitney Houston. However, if a ballad manages to reach the first place and challenge the music world, people highly appreciate this achievement.”
Dieter Bohlen on how he wrote the song:
“That day, my wife Erika went to the Alstertal shopping mall, one of those places where shopping becomes an art form and the stores skillfully convince customers of the need for yet another kitchen gadget or beach outfit. During her absence – an hour and a half, which seemed like an eternity to me – the song “Midnight Lady” was written. When Erika returned, I eagerly played her the composition I had just created. Her reaction was lightning fast and categorical: “Well, here we go again!” The long notes irritated her. At that moment, I decided never again to subject my musical creations to the judgment of women’s opinion.
This first reaction was painful, as it always is when your new creation, not yet fully formed, is met with such harsh disgust. “Midnight Lady” was my precious baby, and it was not easy to hear that…”
Dieter Bohlen on how he chose the performer of the song:
“Now there was only one question left: who could perform my song the way I imagined it? The name of Chris Norman, the legendary singer from the band Smokie, who was in a creative downtime at the time, popped into my head. I had always been a fan of his and often sang his songs in my youth. And now I had the opportunity to offer him to sing my composition.
Chris came to Hamburg and we recorded “Midnight Lady”. He was a fantastic singer, capable of putting deep emotions into his voice. It was a real pleasure to work with him, he was on a completely different level than all the musicians I had worked with before. After Chris recorded the vocals, Louis and I worked on the technical side of the song, adding drums, synths and echo effects.”
Dieter Bohlen on the difficulties he encountered while recording the composition:
“When the song was almost finished, Ilse Hoffman, who was responsible for the music for the crime series “Tatort”, came to Hamburg to listen to my composition. Her reaction was unexpected: “Too pompous! I want it to be more intimate!” She explained that this was necessary for the commercial success of the song. However, I knew that Ilse was a fan of jazz and the music of Chris Rea, and therefore her tastes were different from mine.
I realized that if I didn’t make changes to the song, Ilsa might reject it and my work would be in vain. So I decided to compromise and made the necessary changes. In the end, only the drums, piano and Chris Norman’s voice remained, who sang “Midnight Lady”. However, the song was so strong that no changes could harm it. The only thing that could have spoiled the song was if Ilsa Hoffman had decided to sing with Chris.”
Dieter Bohlen on how he showed the song to the record company:
“When I introduced new Modern Talking songs, everyone usually reacted very positively, clapping and shouting, ‘Yeah! This is great! Top notch!’ However, when ‘Midnight Lady’ came on, the atmosphere in the room changed dramatically. Everyone suddenly went silent, shook their heads thoughtfully, looked at the floor and shuffled their feet. And then the negative comments began: ‘Do you really think you can write ballads? Couldn’t you do something more cheerful?’ Andy, in particular, was never a fan of ballads and always spoke of them with disdain.”
Nevertheless, Bohlen insisted on releasing the song, and here is how he recalls the beginning of the song's popularity:
"The day after the song was released, I couldn't stay in the studio for long and went to a record store to see my work on the shelf and see how sales were going. We had sent out 30,000 copies of the record to stores in advance. However, to my surprise, I couldn't find the cover with Chris Norman's picture anywhere in the store.
I asked the saleswomen, “Girls, why don’t you have ‘Midnight Lady’?” They said, “No, you don’t! We had 50 copies this morning, but they were sold out in 10 minutes.” It was a surprising and pleasant discovery for me.”
“Midnight Lady” reached the top of the German singles chart in May 1986, becoming one of the most popular songs in the country. Chris Norman, the singer of the song, was already well known in Germany, where he recorded his most successful albums in the 1980s. The song also gained wide recognition in Switzerland and Austria, where it also reached number one on the charts. In addition, “Midnight Lady” entered the top 20 in the Netherlands and Belgium, reaching number 9 and number 16 respectively, demonstrating its widespread popularity across Europe.
