“Dream Lover” is a composition created by American artist Bobby Darin. In 1959, the musician recorded his own version and released it as a separate single. At that time, Darin was only 22 years old. The track gained considerable popularity and was repeatedly covered by various artists.
The Story Behind the Song Dream Lover by Bobby Darin
In addition to Bobby Darin's vocals, Neil Sedaka played the piano part in the recording of the song. During the process of working on the composition, Darin made changes to the harmony, intentionally slowing down some of the chord transitions that he picked out on the piano. Additionally, the arrangement was enriched with string instruments and choral accompaniment. The American edition of the single used a special cover with artistic design, which depicted a portrait of the musician.
In terms of musical structure, the composition is based on the rhythms typical of Latin American dances. Darin himself spoke about the process of its creation:
“I just discovered the C-Am-F-G7 chord progression on the piano. I deliberately slowed it down and I liked the feeling of space that came out of it. After that, the words started to form themselves.”
Bobby Darin created a composition where the main character is a young man who passionately dreams and literally prays to fate to meet the ideal girl. If we talk about the meaning of “Dream Lover”, then the lyrics of the song sound like a desire for dreams to finally come true, freeing him from painful dreams.
Bobby Darin initially doubted the success of “Dream Lover” when he pitched it to Atlantic Records. However, the song unexpectedly became a huge hit, which solidified his position as an independent writer and performer. The creative freedom gained from this success became a turning point in his career. Recognition came decades later – in the 1990s, Bobby Darin’s name was immortalized in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Songwriters Hall of Fame.
