How the Backstreet Boys Created the Unconventional Song 'Incomplete'
"Incomplete" is a lyrical composition by the American boy band Backstreet Boys, included in their studio album Never Gone. The heartfelt ballad was released in 2005, becoming the debut single of the group after the resumption of creative activity - the group returned to the stage after a two-year break.
The History of the Creation and Meaning of the Song Incomplete by Backstreet Boys

"Incomplete" marked a turning point for the Backstreet Boys, signaling their desire to reinvent their sound. As band member AJ McLean noted, the group consciously departed from the familiar image formed in the 1990s and early 2000s, taking a course on creative evolution.
The touching ballad was co-written by Nashville producer and composer Dan Mukalla and Los Angeles songwriters Jess Cates and Lindy Robbins. If we talk about the meaning of the song "Incomplete", the composition conveys a deep emotional experience of emptiness that overtakes a person after parting with a loved one.
After the release of the album "Black & Blue" and the end of the global tour in 2001, the members of the Backstreet Boys decided to take an extended break. The reasons were both creative burnout and personal problems that the musicians faced. A.J. McLean went to rehab to cope with addiction, and Nick Carter also underwent treatment.
In 2002, the band parted ways with their management, and most of the members focused on solo projects. However, just two years later, in 2004, the band unexpectedly reunited for a series of concerts in Asia and Mexico, which became the first step towards their full return to the stage.
A year after their reunion, the Backstreet Boys released the first single from their upcoming album, the emotional rock ballad “Incomplete.” The artists were unsure whether they would fit into the changing musical landscape, so they consciously took a creative risk. As Kevin Richardson admitted:
“When we started working on the album, we had absolutely no idea how we could reclaim our place in the modern pop scene.”
The composition was truly unusual for the band – for the first time in their work, only acoustic instruments were used, without the usual electronic arrangements. However, radio broadcasts and music TV channels were skeptical about the updated sound of the cult boy band – some stations even excluded the track from rotation. As band member Kevin Richardson recalled:
“Fans literally besieged the TRL studio, demanding to put our next singles on rotation. But the label representatives gave us shocking news: “MTV refused to air it, saying that they are the ones who determine what is trending now.” It was a low blow.”
Nick Carter later admitted that it was this composition that became a real salvation for the group. In one of his interviews he frankly stated:
“The record company was completely lost, not knowing how to position us in the new reality. However, we were incredibly lucky with 'Incomplete' - a track that did not even resemble our usual style. The audience loved this song for its essence, and not for the name of the performers.”
Nick Carter has openly admitted that the band could no longer claim the superstar status that their previous releases had achieved. The main reason was that many radio stations rejected their new rock-oriented sound. In his memoirs, Carter noted:
“We were able to continue touring. We were able to continue touring thanks to our loyal fan base, even though the radio was literally screaming at us: 'Get lost!' After 'Incomplete', music stations completely deleted us from their playlists.”
Fortunately for the band, fans categorically did not support the radio stations' decision - the return of the Backstreet Boys was met with incredible enthusiasm. Despite all the difficulties, the single achieved an impressive commercial triumph: it took the 13th position in the prestigious American Billboard Hot 100 chart, and in Australia it even soared to the top of the charts.
This success clearly demonstrated that true popularity is measured not only by media support, but also by the sincere love of the audience.
